I cant think of greater music ever, every time i watch it, it reminds me of how much i love Moz and how he truly is the closest thing to God in my world.
While I was listening to Smother I read early reviews of it, and most of them said kind of the same thing, that it was decent but nowhere near spectacular. Now, I love Two Dancers, in my opinion its the best album that came out of 09. Their debut however never did anything for me, rather I found it extremely annoying. Anyways tho, suffice to say I had high expectations for Smother and for the most part i disagree almost completely with the aforementioned reviews. Smother starts off superbly, immediately you can tell that this is in fact a Wild Beasts record, there’s that dark looming feeling thats present in every song. That’s what I love about Wild Beasts - their ability to create a mood thats as dark as the darkest Agalloch record without having to rely on too many effects. These guys know how to write good catchy songs that are not necessarily pop songs which is a hard feat to accomplish.
To be honest when I first heard the first single Albatross, I was bored by it. Don’t get me wrong its a good song and it holds up on its own, but now hearing it in the context of the album - it just doesn’t fit. It’s Smother’s weakest moment, but all hope is not lost because the song that follows happens to be the stand out track on the album, Reach A Bit Further. What makes Reach so great is that it shows how great WB can be when both Hayden and Tom sing on the same song, instead of each having their own song. The darkest and most encapsulating song though on the entire album is the last track, End Come Too Soon, its seven minutes long and every minute is bliss. It ties together what could easily be with more listens one of my favorite albums of the year.
David Wm. Sims himself confirms the best news someone like me can hear all day, that Scratch Acid will indeed play US shows in the fall…
Scratch Acid is going to play at All Tomorrow’s Parties in Minehead, UK. The festival is December 2nd to the 4th. I’m not sure what day we’re playing yet. There will be other dates in November and December in the US, and possibly in Europe. I’ll post it here when I know.
Just as I was getting all broken down and depressed about how much I miss The Jesus Lizard, this news comes along. Shits gonna be off the hook, next best thing to the best live band in American history.
